The determination of minute ventilation in the ICU or O.R. is mandatory for adequate assessment of a patient’s respiratory status. Measurement of vital capacity is an equally important respiratory parameter to evaluate preoperatively, postoperatively or in the patient with progressive neuromuscular weakness (i.e. myasthenia gravis).
