More than 1 in 3 regulators in use may contain pathogens

Hospital suction regulators are an overlooked piece of reusable medical equipment in the patient care environment. A recently published multi-center study identified a high percentage (37%) of operable suction equipment as being contaminated with common hospital pathogens*. This study reviewed 470 suction regulators, in 11 hospitals, across five states. Organisms identified included Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative staphylococci, Enterococcus faecium.

This presents a risk to patients

This same study used an in vitro model to demonstrate a potential patient risk from contaminated suction controls operating in the intermittent mode in less than 24hours of exposure.
