Wound BulletTM Closure Device

Wounds that can not be closed primarily have long been an exceptional challenge for the surgical team. Many have resorted to time-consuming, improvisational methods to manage these cases. What is needed is a simple, effective method that has versatility for a wide array of applications. In cooperation with Temple University Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Boehringer Laboratories, Inc. has developed just such a device. The revolutionary Wound BulletTM closure device can be an effective part of the management of all types of difficult to close wounds including fasciotomies, abdominal compartment syndrome, and trauma.

If you have a patient who is suffering with an open wound, the Wound BulletTM may prove to be the solution you have both been waiting for.

DESCRIPTION

The design features a shaft within a cylinder through which standard sutures are threaded. By turning the internal shaft with the use of a simple tool, tension is applied to the surrounding tissue. Tension is maintained by the periodic tightening of the sutures as needed. Because the tension is distributed evenly, approximation smoothly follows the natural contour of the body and provides improved aesthetic results.

Thigh Fasciotomy Intraop

Intraoperative placement during thigh fasciotomy.

Day 2, Day 4

Progression of wound closure. Day 2 (left) and day 4 (right).

Day 5 Closure

Closure achieved on day 5

ADVANTAGES

  • Simple application and tensioning method preserves the integrity of the tissue at the wound margin and can eliminate the need for repositioning.

  • Internal braking mechanism and release provide reliable operation.

  • Disposable- no risk of cross-contamination.

  • Compact size and release mechanism allow for easier packing and dressing

  • Compatible with vacuum dressings due to low profile design.

  • Approximation required for closure can be achieved in a fraction of the traditional time.

  • Accelerated closure can limit the need for skin graft as well as reduce risk of infection.
